Clarity on Major Roads Scheme

MSPs have once again called upon the chief executive of South Lanarkshire Council for an update on the £62.2 million Stewartfield Way upgrade proposals.

The major roads scheme in East Kilbride intended to extend the East Kilbride Expressway, with a new flyover linking Stewartfield and avoiding the busy few roundabouts currently in this location at at Kingsgate. The scheme also intended to dual the Stewartfield road over to Peel Park, but was met with stiff protests in recent years.

In March 2020, the local authority scaled back their plans to dual the entire length of the road, as well as removing plans for a flyover at Kingsgate, citing environmental reasons.

Now, with plans afoot for a £20m Caledonian Gladiators basketball stadium at Playsport, Collette Stevenson MSP is calling for clarity on construction plans for the people of Stewartfield.

The MSP said: “In the face of strong opposition from locals, and in light of the Scottish Government declaring a climate emergency, plans were rightly revised for the project. That was welcomed at the time, but now we are almost three-and-a-half years on, people are asking what is happening and when we will see the works complete.”

“Since the original project included dualling the entire road, as well as a flyover at a cost of £62 million, I have asked for a recent estimate cost of the works.”

“Stewartfield has a poor public transport network which needs to change if we want fewer cars on the road.”
