A new multi-million-pound basketball stadium has opened at Play Sport, Stewartfield, East Kilbride.
Caledonia Gladiators played their first game this week at the new venue. Based at PlaySport Scotland leisure complex, more than 112,000 man-hours have been spent transforming the space into a 1,600-seater stadium in the last six months.
The stadium renovation is the first stage of a £20 million stadium project – the largest single investment in Scottish basketball history. Club owners businessman Steve Timoney and wife Alison, who also own Crossbasket Castle, have funded the project.
Steve said: “Our new stadium looks incredible, and we’re really pleased with the finished result. It’s been a very intense period getting the stadium ready, but it’s definitely been worth the wait. We’re also really proud of our new fan zone, which we believe will really add to the matchday experience for our fans.”
The women’s team’s first game will later take place on October 18 against SL Benfica in a European tie.
