Work to demolish High Blantyre’s derelict ‘Kirkton Care Home’ enters the final stages this week as the demolition Contractor begins their final tidy up of the site before leaving.
Beattie, the chosen demolition contractor for South Lanarkshire Council is just about finished the careful demolition work, which has been ongoing since the first week in October 2023.
Careful disconnection of services, recycling and sorting of materials has meant though the work has taken several weeks, it has been done in sustainable, controlled, safe manner.
The Care home, owned by South Lanarkshire Council has been derelict for a couple of years following the creation of Blantyre LIFE, the new state of the art care hub at Glasgow Road. The care home at High Blantyre was known for its excellent standards of care from staff, though the building itself was now outdated and had become unfit for purpose for 21st Century standards.
Built in 1967, the care home lasted 51 years before an announcement came in 2018 about its closure. The levelled site may look strange to many people at present, a landmark now gone.
However, plans for this site have been announced.
The land was transferred to Housing Dept last year and is now included in the Council’s Strategic Housing Improvement Plan. 12 much needed new council homes for social rent are planned, funded by the Scottish Government. 2 of these will be for special needs.
