The Barnhill Tavern

A couple of weeks ago, we were delighted to be invited along by the Carrigan family to see the ongoing renovation of their latest pub, at Bardykes Road, Blantyre….which now has an official name!

In a huge nod to local heritage, the former Hoolets pub will officially re-open as “The Barnhill Tavern“, a name steeped in history and of course the original name of the public house. Throughout the centuries, the Barnhill Tavern has known to be located on this spot, with the building itself more known by that name, than not. It’s a fitting tribute for Blantyre and if you’re of a certain generation, you may know the building by that name already!

The Carrigan gents gave us a personal tour around showing us their grand plans, including a larger bar area, new fireplace, snug areas, new windows doors, wiring, plumbing, new second entrance, a larger interior footprint for customers….and some incredible work being done to improve the outbuildings, landscape outdoor areas, new walls and beer garden.

The Barnhill Tavern is being kept as a traditional public house. The fittings, though new, will look old. Some things are deliberately old. Cast radiators and beautiful old wooden flooring carefully salvaged from the offices of the White Star line, add to a rustic charm. The pub promises to be friendly, warm and cosy. It really is looking amazing! Outside, renovation of stonework, painting and new signage continues.

And the exciting news? The Barnhill Tavern, Blantyre’s latest destination for friends and family will re-open soon….in a few weeks in early July!

We can’t wait for a first pint and want to thank the Carrigan family for their kindness. (and this little exclusive!)

  1. Canni wait!
Doubt it will be open for my upcoming visit, but maybe an incentive for another future visit.
Spent a lot of hours (and money) over maybe too many years in the 70s with lots of other fine patrons.
Offering thanks to John Carrigan and his team for saving and re inventing the “Hoolets”.
