For those wondering what is happening with the flats on Stonefield Road and Camelon Crescent, South Lanarkshire Council have provided Cllr Maureen Chalmers with an update, which is shared here:
“I am the Contractor Administrator for the Camelon Crescent EWI upgrade project and have been asked to respond to your email below.
In terms of progress, over the last weeks (whilst three of the blocks have been scaffolded), there have been subcontractors on site coring holes externally at all levels to both extract the old cavity insulation, and also pump in new high performance bead insulation.
In preparation of the EWI installation, all external cables / lights / satellite dishes have been temporarily removed off the walls.
Consultant structural engineers have carried out various tests on the concrete balconies, on all floors, to confirm the level of dilapidation and repair strategy, as well as ‘pull-out’ tests on the walls to confirm the fixing type required for the EWI slabs.
Window surveys (on all floors) have also been carried out, to allow for the prompt manufacture of new energy efficient windows.
I have spoken with the contractor earlier today, and the EWI insulation slabs will begin installation tomorrow. Also, the roof strip on the first block is programmed to commence this Wednesday.
In terms of Health and Safety on site, GMG contractors are responsible for the implementation and management of this. The scaffolds have all been tested and certified. Access consists of ladders which, when not in use, are fitted with ladder guards over them padlocked into place, to prevent anyone climbing them. Each ladder guard also has clear ‘DO NOT ENTER’ signage. Heras fencing surrounds the first block to have EWI installed, however, this has to allow for residents to come in and out of their flats, so cannot completely close the area off.
It has been our experience in the past that no matter the lengths contractors go to in preventing access onto scaffolds through strict adherence to CDM regulations, determined individuals can unfortunately find a way.
Local residents will imminently begin to see the transformation of these blocks into energy-efficient buildings with a renewed, really attractive external appearance.”
