Popular Speedway Day

More than 550 visitors recently attended this year’s popular annual speedway day at Summerlee heritage museum in Coatbridge.

As well as a display of vintage bikes, there were many speedway stars in attendance, with the Coatbridge Tigers team of the 1970s well represented by members including Jim Beaton, Brian Collins, Harry McLean and Benny Rourke, along with former Berwick rider Andy Meldrum and Stuart Coleman, of Glasgow Tigers.

Memorabilia about Blantyre Speedway was also on display. It was a time to remember the sport’s Lanarkshire era when regular race meetings took place at Cliftonhill stadium in Coatbridge as well as in Blantyre and Motherwell.

Event organiser John Houston told Blantyre Telegraph: “People enjoyed all the memorabilia on show as it brought back good memories – a good day was had by all and we hope to see everyone back next year.”

John would like to thank Summerlee development officer David McDonald and manager Lu McNair for their help in arranging this year’s successful event.
