Minutes Silence in Blantyre

This morning, we’re holding a minutes silence at 8.45am, Tuesday 22nd October 2024 to remember the 215 men and boys who lost their lives in the Blantyre Pit Disaster of 1877. Please join us.

In that one instant in 1877, an explosion wiped out 6% of the entire population of Blantyre at Dixon’s Pits 2 and 3. To this day, still Scotland’s worst ever mining disaster.

As we have done every year since 2011, on behalf of YOU and the entire Blantyre Community, we’ve bought memorial wreaths and placed them at the Pit Disaster Memorial at High Blantyre Cross and one also at the Dixon’s Obelisk near many of the miners final resting place. May their souls all rest in peace.
