Millions of people in Scotland have tonight received an emergency alert ahead of a dangerous, red weather warning.
Residents with compatible mobile phones in the 22 council areas expected to be worst affected by the storm were sent the alert at around 18:00 this evening, Thursday 23rd January.
It comes following announcements of schools and travel companies closing down tomorrow for the day.
Phones emitted a loud, siren-like sound and vibrated for approximately 10 seconds, even if set to silent. This marks the first official use of the emergency alert system in Scotland.
According to the Met Office, Storm Éowyn could bring winds of up to 100mph in some areas, with Lanarkshire in the centre of the alert. This does look to be more severe than winds we’ve seen in recent years and according to authorities, posing risks to life from flying debris, power cuts, and damage to buildings. Be safe.
Have your say. Who got a fright when the alert landed?
