Celebrating the Summer Solstice: The Longest Day in the UK

Today Saturday 21st June marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year here in the UK! With the sun rising early and setting late, we’re treated to around 17 hours of daylight – a real gift for anyone soaking up the summer vibes.

But from tomorrow onwards, the days will slowly begin to shorten. That means darker evenings will gradually return, a subtle reminder that we’re now on the wrong side of summer, the slow path back towards autumn and winter.

The word solstice comes from the Latin solstitium, meaning “sun standing still”. It refers to the point where the sun appears at its highest in the sky at noon and seems to pause before changing direction. Historically, the summer solstice has been celebrated by many cultures as a time of light, fertility, and renewal, with ancient landmarks like Stonehenge perfectly aligned to mark this celestial event.

So if you’re out and about this evening, take a moment to enjoy the lingering twilight – it’s the year’s turning point, and a beautiful one at that.
