A reminder that the Blantyre Library at the corner of Glasgow Road and Victoria Street has now closed.
A new book lending space is being created in the existing Blantyre Sports Centre. The library, one of 7 to close permanently in South Lanarkshire closed its doors for the last time at the end of August, as part of the councils £750k funding cuts.
The loss of the library in Blantyre is a huge blow to the community with South Lanarkshire Council being criticised by some community groups for their appalling decision, which, like the closure of some community halls, could have been avoided. The new provision in the Leisure centre is far from being the larger library across the road, but more of a small space in the reception area with no access to computers. However, it is set to include self-service kiosks for readers to check out and return books outside the staffed hours, free wifi, and access to photocopying and printing services.
The Sports centre is currently undergoing a month long upgrade which has the pool closed. The gym will take longer and is anticipated to reopen for Christmas.
The future of the old library at Clydeview West is currently unknown.
