Explore David Dale’s Complicated Legacy at Glasgow’s 850th Celebration

As part of Glasgow’s 850th Anniversary celebrations, there’s a fantastic talk being given this Saturday 18th October which might interest local people due to the Blantyre connection!

The Complicated David Dale: Cotton merchant and abolitionist, is the subject of the presentation, the former Blantyre Works owner during the late 1700s.

David Dale’s wealth derived from cotton manufacturing depended on enslaved labor for raw materials. Yet he was also an early abolitionist who chaired the Glasgow Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade. Dominic d’Angelo, whose researches into Glasgow’s merchant families and links to slavery over two decades ago, looks at Dale’s complicated legacy.
