The end of an era. Spotted in the news today. Fawlty Towers star Prunella Scales has sadly passed away at the age of 93, her family has confirmed.
Beloved for her iconic role as Sybil Fawlty, the sharp-tongued and formidable wife of Basil — played by John Cleese — Scales became a cornerstone of British comedy through her unforgettable performances in the classic sitcom.
Her sons, Samuel and Joseph, said the actress “died peacefully at home in London yesterday”, adding that she had been watching Fawlty Towers the day before her death.
Paying tribute, Cleese described Scales as “a really wonderful comic actress”, adding: “Scene after scene, she was absolutely perfect.”
