Local Student Tyler Meechan Shines in First Year as Black Belt

Twelve-year-old Tyler Meechan, a first-year pupil at St Ogilvie High School, is already making a powerful name for herself on the international Taekwon-Do stage.

Competing in her first year as a 1st Degree Black Belt, Tyler has shown maturity, discipline and determination well beyond her years. A respected role model within UKTC Taekwon-Do, she trains an incredible six times per week — a level of commitment that is clearly paying off.

In 2026 alone, Tyler has competed in two local championships, taking top spot on both occasions. One of those events saw her crowned 2 x English Champion, a remarkable achievement in her debut season as a black belt.

Her success did not stop there.

Tyler was selected to represent Scotland-ITF at one of the largest Taekwon-Do competitions in the world — the prestigious Flanders Field International Championships in Belgium. Competing against a strong field of 32 talented athletes, Tyler fought her way through the rounds to reach the semi-finals in the patterns division. Determined to achieve her goal of standing on the podium, she delivered an outstanding performance to secure the bronze medal.

For a first-year black belt competing on the international stage, this achievement marks an exceptional milestone in what is already shaping up to be a very promising career.

Now, Tyler’s focus shifts to the remainder of the 2026 season. With the UKTC Scottish Championships in April and the Ireland Championships in September on the horizon, she has her sights firmly set on achieving a potential clean sweep of three gold medals — alongside any further opportunities that come her way.

Behind every successful athlete is a strong support system, and Tyler is quick to credit the dedicated instructor team at UKTC Taekwon-Do for moulding and guiding her development. Their expertise, encouragement and belief in her ability have played a significant role in shaping her into the confident and composed martial artist she is today.

Balancing school life at St Ogilvie High with elite-level training and competition is no small task, yet Tyler continues to demonstrate humility, respect and leadership both inside and outside the dojang.

With her work ethic, competitive drive and the backing of her coaches and teammates, the future looks incredibly bright for this young Scottish talent.
