Blantyre has lost one of its true community stalwarts. It is with great sadness that we share the news that well known Blantyre man, Brian Charlton passed away peacefully at home on the morning of Sunday 19th April, surrounded by his family.
Brian was known and respected by so many people across Blantyre, leaving behind a lasting legacy of kindness, dedication and community spirit.
A thoughtful and deeply caring man, Brian devoted years of his life to helping improve the area he loved. His unwavering commitment to local people was especially felt in the Priory Bridge area, where he served as co-ordinator of the Priory Bridge Residents Association. Through his efforts, he helped bring neighbours together and worked tirelessly to make the community a better place for everyone.
Other people will remember when Brian organised brand new welcome signage for various entry points into this town, signs which are still there today.
Many will remember Brian not just for what he did, but for who he was — warm, dependable and always ready to help others. He was married to wife Ellen for just over 55 years, having recently celebrated his wedding anniversary. A family man, he brought joy to those around him and made a genuine difference to countless lives. We knew Brian for over 15 years and took great delight in listening to his stories and impressed by how knowledgeable he was. He took time to listen to others.
Brian’s funeral will take place on 7th May at 11am at South Lanarkshire Crematorium, followed by a gathering at The Parkville, Glasgow Road, Blantyre where all are welcome to attend and share memories.
Our thoughts are with his wife Ellen, his son Gordon, daughter Denise and the wider family at this very sad time. Brian will be greatly missed.
