It is with great sadness we heard today about the passing of well known local woman, Margo Haughen (nee Wilkie).
Daughter Ruth has issued a statement on behalf of the family adding, “Its with sadness that we share the news that our beloved mum, Margo Haughen (née Wilkie), passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the comfort of those she loved.”
Margo was a familiar face to so many throughout Blantyre. As part of the Wilkie family from Bardykes Farm, she was known by generations of local people. She dedicated much of her life to caring for others, first as a much-loved nurse, mainly at Stonehouse Hospital, and later supporting children with additional needs at High Blantyre Primary School and Auchinraith Primary School. Her kindness, compassion and unwavering commitment touched the lives of countless patients, children, families and colleagues.
Outside of work, Margo was a familiar face as part of “The Owls” quiz team at the Doon Inn for decades. She had a simple outlook on life: if you had something nice to say, then say it. Whether it was complimenting a stranger’s hair or taking the time to brighten someone’s day, she believed kindness was there to be shared.
Anyone who knew Margo will know she didn’t like a fuss or want to be the centre of attention. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. We’d much rather people remember her over a glass of red wine with a story, or perhaps by paying someone an unexpected compliment, as she so often did.
Ruth continued, “If you would like to remember Margo, donations in lieu of flowers can be made in support of the Hamilton District Nurses, in recognition of the outstanding care, compassion, and kindness they showed throughout her journey. As NHS guidance doesn’t allow us to thank the district nurses with personal gifts, we’ve chosen to pay their kindness forward instead. The donations will be used to create a stock of essential items and small gifts that the district nurses can give to patients who need them.”
“Throughout Mum’s care, we saw first-hand how often these nurses quietly purchased thoughtful gifts and practical comforts out of their own pockets, expecting nothing in return. Their generosity knew no bounds. By creating this supply, future patients and their families can receive the same kindness, comfort, dignity, and exceptional care that Margo experienced at the end of her life. It’s our way of saying thank you while helping these incredible nurses continue making a difference when it matters most.”
“Thank you to everyone who has shown us such kindness and support at this difficult time. We know how many lives Mum touched, and we hope she’ll be remembered for her warmth, her sense of humour, and her belief that a few kind words could make someone’s day.”
Until 31/07/2026 we are accepting donation to the Hamilton District Nurses in memory of Margo Haughen. If you would like to contribute.

On a personal note, Margo was a lovely lady. Kind, witty and much respected. She often had a comment on our pages here at Telegraph or Blantyre Project. She will be much missed. Our thoughts are with the Haughen and Wilkie families at this sad time.
