A Blantyre -based family decorating business has joined forces with Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team to help transform the home of a local family – marking the second time the company has answered the programme’s call for tradespeople.
A Brush Too Much, known as the “Rockers with Rollers”, will appear on BBC One’s DIY SOS when the Glasgow episode airs on Tuesday at 8pm.
The episode follows Raymond and his children, Kai and Nell, following the loss of wife and mum Gill. Nell, a bright and bubbly preteen who uses a wheelchair, needed a home that would allow her to live with greater independence.
Raymond gave up his job as a plumber to become Nell’s full-time carer, and the existing family home presented significant accessibility challenges.
DIY SOS brought together tradespeople and volunteers to transform the property into a home designed around Nell’s needs and give the whole family a more accessible space for the future.
For the A Brush Too Much team – Andy, Liam, Oscar and Callum – there was no hesitation when the opportunity arose to get involved.
Andy said:
“As a family-run business, and having survived sepsis not once but twice myself, hearing Nell and her family’s story made getting involved a no-brainer for us.
“We wanted to give something back, and to do it in a big way. It was genuinely one of the best experiences we’ve ever had.
“Working alongside volunteers from so many different trades, as well as the DIY SOS team, to create a home this family can be proud of and deserves was incredibly special.
“These builds are busy, stressful and involve very long days, but everyone pulls together with the same goal. Our team played their part, delivered and helped pull it out the bag. To say I’m proud of them would be an understatement.
“We’re just hoping we managed to get some screen time now – although I’ve always said I’ve got a face for radio!”
It is not the first time A Brush Too Much has downed tools for a DIY SOS project.
The team previously travelled from Scotland to Cheshire to volunteer on the huge DIY SOS Children in Need build for The Joshua Tree, a charity supporting families affected by childhood cancer.
That project saw hundreds of volunteers come together over just 12 days to expand The Joshua Tree’s Family Support Centre. The completed development doubled the size of the centre, adding facilities including family accommodation, therapy spaces, counselling rooms and a gym.
For A Brush Too Much, taking part for a second time reflects the values behind a business that Andy has built from being one man on the tools into a growing family-run company over the past six years.
The company has developed a reputation for combining a serious approach to its craft with a personality that is unmistakably its own – earning the team their “Rockers with Rollers” nickname.
Today, A Brush Too Much is a Dulux Select Decorator and CITB accredited, as well as an ambassador for Impera Italia, a leading London-based supplier and training facility specialising in luxury Italian decorative finishes.
Andy added:
“When I started A Brush Too Much, I wanted to create the kind of company I would have wanted to work for myself – somewhere people are trained properly, the team is looked after and everyone takes real pride in their craft.
“We work hard, we have a laugh and the rock tunes are probably played far too loudly, but ultimately we care about doing a brilliant job.
“Somewhere along the way, Rockers with Rollers has become a proper wee family legacy, and experiences like DIY SOS remind us that our skills can be used for much more than simply decorating someone’s home.”
A Brush Too Much will appear on DIY SOS on BBC One on Tuesday 22nd at 8pm.
