Blantyre’s rich history and one of its darkest chapters will be remembered at a special community event next week.
Organised by Blantyre Community Council, local historian Gordon Cook of Blantyre Heritage Group will deliver a fascinating and moving talk entitled “1877 Blantyre Mining Disaster: Some Personal Stories”.
The disaster of 22 October 1877 claimed the lives of 215 miners and remains one of the most tragic events in our town’s history.
Through personal stories, Gordon will explore the lives of those affected, the families left behind and the lasting impact the tragedy had on the Blantyre community.
The talk takes place on the 149th anniversary of the disaster, making this a particularly poignant opportunity to remember those who lost their lives.
