It’s almost voting day! Polling Stations open at 7am tomorrow Thursday 5th October 2023 for the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election and will remain open until 10pm.
There will be 14 candidates on the ballot paper.
For those voting in person, voting may be slightly different to what you’re used to. The South Lanarkshire poll will be the first time voters anywhere in Scotland will need to show a form of photographic identification before casting their ballot.
The measure was brought in by the UK Government in a bid to tackle personation, the electoral crime of pretending to be someone else to use their vote. So, please remember to take your photographic ID to the polling station.
The campaigns have been fought long and hard for many months with lots of knocking on doors, high profile visits and endless flyers and leaflets through letterboxes. We hope enough diligence has been met with for YOU to make up YOUR mind, who is best to represent Blantyre in the coming years.
The 6 Polling Stations in Blantyre are:
1. Auchinraith Primary School , Victoria Street, Blantyre, G72 0BF
2. High Blantyre Primary School , Broompark Road, High Blantyre, G72 9SH
3. High Blantyre Public Hall , 22 Cemetery Road, High Blantyre, G72 0HA
4. St Blane’s Primary School , Fernslea Avenue, Blantyre, G72 9PT
5. St Joseph’s Primary School (Note: Use Main Entrance), Park Lane, Blantyre, G72 9AS
6. TACT Community Hall , Hillview Drive, Blantyre, G72 9EF
We don’t often post about politics on this website, but from our own polling over the last decade, Blantyre Telegraph has confidently been able to predict in advance, the correct outcome for this constituency the previous three times! However, this time according to our recent public poll and sample of many hundreds of local voters….. it’s just too close to call! In a seat which is won by the narrowest of margins, it will be as important as ever for people to go out and actually cast their vote.
Here’s wishing the very best of luck to ALL candidates and ALL parties representing this area. With first past the post, may the most popular candidate win!
It’s understood the result will be known by around 1am on Friday morning.
