Remembering Allan Syme

Today, we pay our respects to Blantyre born, Allan Syme, who sadly passed away last Friday, aged 74.

Allan was born in Blantyre in 1945. The son of Ina and Allan Syme, he grew up in the Crescents. Many people may remember his mother who was a talented Blantyre artist, her painting style well ahead of her time. Schooled in Blantyre, Allan had a keen interest in all sports, especially rugby and swimming, gaining accolades in each. In fact there wasn’t many sports Allan didn’t do. He was a founding member of nearby EK Rugby Club.

He had a keen interest in fishing and diving. As a teenager this was put into good practice when he saved the life of a drowning girl.

In 1968 he married his sweetheart Jane and they set up home in East Kilbride. Allan worked within the emerging electronics industry and his hard work saw him become accomplished and very successful. He moved eastwards to Dollar in Clackmannanshire and had 2 sons, Jason and Jamie. He very much became a pillar of the community in Dollar.

At 6 foot 8, he was difficult not to miss! A gentle giant, kind and caring with a dry sense of humour. He dearly wished to settle down near a beach, which he did later in life on the Isle of Tiree, his second home.

Allan was laid to rest today, Monday 1 July 2019 with his funeral so busy, there was hardly standing room. He was a family friend of ours, deeply respected and his warm smile will be missed by many.

You sir, were one of life’s true gents. Rest in Peace Allan.
