A Blantyre Boxing Club has put out a plea for some assistance.
The Blantyre Miners Boxing Club was based in the community resource centre, which as you may know was destroyed by fire in November 2017. The club still don’t have permanent premises of their own and have been using a ‘distant’ hall and O’Neills Boxing Club equipment in Halfway a couple of nights a week.
They’re seeking premises in Blantyre, perhaps a hall, club or venue with enough space.
Drew McInally told us, “I’m one of the coaches with Blantyre Miners Boxing Club. The Welfare boxing club has been in existence for over 40+ years with John McDermott (commonwealth gold medallist) and Jim Melrose (champion professional boxer) still coaching at the club and we are desperate to keep the club together.”
It seems likely that it may take at least another year for the Miners Welfare Resource Centre in Calder Street to be rebuilt, the rebuild not started yet.
The club is looking to reach out to anyone in Blantyre who could help them to find local premises to rent until such times as they are able to get back to the Welfare.
Drew continued, “So far we have been unsuccessful trying by ourselves. We are getting our equipment replaced so need somewhere that we could set it up and be able to leave it up for use. Any help would be gratefully appreciated to help find us a temporary home in Blantyre.”
Any suggestions or anybody in a position to help?
