UWS Student tests positive COVID-19

Students at University of the West of Scotland in Hamilton Technology Park have tonight been sent the following email, which is reprinted here in full.

The contents confirm a student has tested positive for Coronavirus and is currently being treated in hospital. With limited contact with other students, the risk of further infection in this case was very low, but the University in conjunction with NHS has sent out a precautionary and informative email to students for reassurance.

Nicole Smith, who shared this information is a student at the Lanarkshire Campus University in High Blantyre and has asked for all other students to check their emails to ensure they’re fully informed. Several other students have also come forward stating they have received the same email from official UWS communications.

We hope the person in hospital is ok and makes a good recovery. The campus remains fully open and operational.

The case brings the total of Coronavirus cases in Lanarkshire as of today at 2 people, with another 16 people confirmed elsewhere in Scotland. It is worth noting that of the 1,957 coronavirus tests carried out in Scotland, 1,939 were negative.

UWS have been approached for an official statement.
