Local man Scott Learmonth encourages school children to reduce their screen time and get creative with Lego during lockdown.
‘Let’s Go Construct’ is a not-for-profit community interest group. Co-founder Scott came up with the idea while he was a Boys Brigade officer and noticed many of the boys were playing Lego games on their PlayStations but had never psychically played with the Danish childhood favourite.
He said: “There are many advantages of Lego rather than video games, the main one being teaching hand to eye coordination as well as helping to develop kids’ imaginations.”
‘Lets Go Construct’ offers a monthly £3.50 subscription which gives kids a challenge card, a sweet and a lucky dip random Lego Minifigure on a monthly basis. The first payment is a one-off £5 which includes a box of Lego building blocks.
One parent said: “My Son is Lego mad and this is an incentive for him to be on his best behaviour each month.”
A health and wellbeing survey conducted by the NHS found children in the UK aged between
5-16 years spend 6.3 hours a day in front of a screen. In Glasgow 96% of teenagers spend up to 16 hours in front of a screen during weekdays.
Back to basics and a rest from technology is a welcome step in the times of home schooling and increased technology usage.
