Having visited the Maggie’s Centre in the grounds of Monklands Hospital earlier this year, Neil Gray, MSP for Airdrie and Shotts, was so impressed with the specialist cancer support offered by Maggie’s, that he has bravely agreed to walk over hot coals to raise funds.
Neil met with centre visitors who were attending a Stress Management Course and heard just how valuable the cancer support provided is at what is a very difficult and challenging time for people with cancer and their loved ones.
Neil Gray said “This centre is a fabulous facility on the grounds of Monklands Hospital and offers a wonderful and varied programme of support. It was a great chance for me to chat to visitors and hear first-hand how they have been supported by Maggie’s. Whilst there, I picked up a leaflet for their Firewalk event and decided I would take on the challenge and hopefully raise some funds.”
Neil will walk barefoot over hot coals that reach a temperature of around 1200 degrees. “I wouldn’t say I’m looking forward to it as I imagine the fear might kick in but I’m certain that it will be a fun and inspiring challenge and I know it shall be for a great cause”.
Lorrie Cameron, Centre Head for Maggie’s Lanarkshire said: “We are very grateful to Neil Gray for taking on this challenge and for his support for Maggie’s Lanarkshire. It promises to be a spectacular event and hope that others will join Neil on this night. People with cancer need Maggie’s more than ever right now and this event has come at a perfect time.”
Everyone who takes part will complete a safety seminar and motivational chat before completing the challenge. Registration is £20 and Maggie’s are hoping that each person shall raise £150.00To book your place, please contact the fundraising team on 01236 771 191 or email lanarkshirefundraising@maggiescentres.org
