Retailer Scotmid are giving away grants of up to £200 for community groups to buy fruit trees throughout Lanarkshire.
Volunteer groups are being invited to plant new orchards with this funding with the intention of establishing community orchards in rural areas, expanding Scotmid’s nationwide campaign.
70 sites have already been created.
Scotmid communities manager Lynne Ogg said: “It’s been so encouraging watching communities come together to plant a whole host of fruit trees and bushes; some groups have already spotted their first fruit and we can’t wait to hear how good they taste.
“This is a fun way to get together with your community and a really easy way to get outside and enjoy your local environment we would love for more communities to benefit from this initiative.”
Hamilton, Blantyre and East Kilbride each have three Scotmid stores. If YOUR community group fancies establishing an orchard in this local area, the online application form is here https://scotmid.coop/communityorchard/
