Scottish Labour Leaders in town

Scottish Labour Senior figures were in Rutherglen and Blantyre today, Tuesday 15th August 2023.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and his Scottish counterpart Anas Sarwar held an “in conversation event” with supporters in Rutherglen, fending off some tough questions about the cap on two child benefit and allegations of division within the party.

Sir Keir said the session demonstrated the “shared objectives” of the UK and Scottish leaders “about where we want to get to and the change we want to bring about”. He promised Labour would “smash the glass ceiling” that holds working people back.

“It means striking a new deal that will strengthen workers’ rights and finally make work pay. No more zero hour contracts, no more fire and rehire, and a real living wage for everyone,” he said.

They then came to Blantyre visiting Carrigans in Broompark Road along with other party members and were set to hold a questions and answer session in the evening.

In recent days Scotland’s First Minister was in town. A sharp increase in political visitors to the area has been prompted by a forthcoming by election. A date has yet to be set but the earliest it could happen would be 5th October.

Earlier in the week, our by-election poll which hundreds of readers took part in, suggested that if extrapolated, the result is currently “too close to call” between Labour and SNP. A position, quite common for this seat in post Millennium years.
