Knotweed Hotspot

Blantyre has been identified as a thriving ‘hotspot’ for invasive weed, Japanese Knotweed.

The unwanted weed which can grow tall and rapidly can cause extensive damage to gardens, infrastructure and property. First brought to the UK in Victorian times, there are certain areas in Scotland where the weed has been treated more than others.

Behind Glasgow, Aberdeen and Hamilton, Blantyre is thought to be fourth in the list compiled by Environet UK’s Knotweed hotspot tracker.

In May, the weed begins to grow rapidly, the growth turning into bamboo like shoots. It can grow up to 3m tall and by as much as 10cm in 1 day in Summer. By August, the plant is in bloom with small white flowers.

To get rid of it, you can try getting rid of it yourself by cutting down the canes as close to the ground as possible then pouring a glyphosate-based weedkiller on it – making sure to only spray these weeds and not other plants. Wait a week before you pull the weeds from the ground to allow the chemical solution time to target deep into the roots.

If you have a severe case of Japanese knotweed that is causing damage to your property, it is best to seek professional help. Gardening companies local to you should have all the tools and chemicals required to get rid of the invasive weeds.
