Camelon Crescent Facelift

Much needed repairs on a block of dilapidated homes in the heart of Blantyre are now underway.

Contractors have arrived on site at Stonefield Road and Camelon Crescent and erected scaffolding and perimeter fencing, with fabric repair work on the exterior of the buildings now commenced.

Following years of neglect, the flats at Cameron Crescent, were in a poor state of repair. Broken fencing, paint stripped from cills and balconies, broken gas boxes, roughcast falling off were just some of the issues. The homes, as several messages to us over recent years suggested, had become a bit of an eyesore.

A residents group had been set up pre Covid raising concerns with the Council and calling for more direct action. At an open day in July 2024, it was announced that South Lanarkshire Council would be undertaking repairs this Summer under their ‘external fabric repair programme’ and that the tender process was complete with contractors chosen.

A council representative told Blantyre Telegraph this week, “Work currently underway between 40 – 128 Camelon Crescent includes the structural repair and painting of concrete balconies, fixing drains, new roof and loft insulation, new double glazed windows, gutterwork, painting, external wall insulation and render finishes and general tidying of the fabric of the buildings. Inside, work includes new electric lighting, repairs and decoration to closes, new security door systems and fire rated doors.”

This programme of work has been much anticipated, hugely benefiting those living there and improving the aesthetics for all others. A positive step towards ensuring our town has safe, environmentally considered homes and looks and feels as beautiful as it can be.
