Pension Credit & Winter Fuel Payment

Rutherglen Constituency MSP, Clare Haughey, is set to host a drop-in event in Blantyre, alongside Hamilton Citizens’ Advice Bureau, to offer advice and assistance to residents about Pension Credit and Winter Fuel Payments.

The UK Labour Government’s recent decision to means test the Winter Fuel Payment will result in many pensioners losing out on support with fuel bills this winter.

Under the changes, older people will now only be eligible for the payment if they are in receipt of Pension Credit – a benefit to help people with their living costs if the person is over State Pension age and on a low income – or certain other means-tested benefits.

Many of the 60,000 South Lanarkshire residents who received the Winter Fuel Payment last year will be ineligible.  Last year, only 8,444 people in South Lanarkshire were in receipt of Pension Credit – meaning up to 52,000 could miss out on their Winter Fuel Payment this year.

UK Government estimates show that around 880,000 households who are eligible for Pension Credit, and therefore still eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, do not claim it.

The event will run alongside Blantyre Old Parish Church’s weekly “Warm Welcome” session, which offers hot food and good company in the church hall.

Commenting, Clare Haughey said:

“I am pleased to host this important event alongside the Citizens’ Advice Bureau in light of the cuts to Winter Fuel Payments.  The figures around unclaimed Pension Credit are concerning, and I would strongly encourage anyone who thinks they might be eligible for it to come along if they would like more information.

“Sadly, not everyone will be eligible for Pension Credit, and so hundreds of thousands will miss out on the Winter Fuel Payment this year because of the UK Government’s decision.  I am deeply worried about those who are just above the threshold for Pension Credit – this could include people with incomes of just £12,000 per year.

“However, I want to do all I can to ensure as many people can continue to receive assistance with their bills, and to link them into other sources of support.

“If you or any family members or friends will be affected by the changes, the CAB team and I will be happy to help.”

The drop-in event will take place between 1pm and 3pm on Wednesday 16th October, in Blantyre Old Parish Church hall, Craigmuir Road, Blantyre, and no appointment is necessary.

The Warm Welcome group meets in Blantyre Old Parish Church every Wednesday, from 12pm to 2pm, and all are welcome to join.
