South Lanarkshire Council has responded to public pressure from Larkhall organisations to find additional funding for the brand new Larkhall Leisure Centre.
An additional £4m has been announced by SLC leaders Joe Fagan taking the construction of the new centre from £24m to £28m. The move responds to concerned and annoyed residents who signed a petition of over 1,800 people, about the lack of a games room in the new build. An indoor sports area accommodating at least three badminton courts will now be included in the plans.
Cllr Fagan added, “He said: “Larkhall needs a new leisure centre and we are going to build one – and we now believe we can build one with a larger games hall, in line with community aspirations. I intend to put forward a council budget that invests in all parts of South Lanarkshire, and that will include increasing investment in our Larkhall Leisure Centre project.”
“I have listened to representations from the community, local councillors, our MSPs and Imogen Walker MP. They have made a strong case but it is only through the swift action I am proposing that we can put in place investment for the new financial year – not available until now – to expand the project.”
Larkhall’s new Leisure Centre has now more than doubled from its initial costings of £13m.
