Blantyreferme Roundabout Update

Thought it was time for an update on the Blantyreferme roadworks.

Construction work is progressing well on the new roundabout at the junction of Blantyre Farm Road and Calder Road. The new roundabout junction is starting to take shape, now formed, though the road to Newton remains closed for now.

Contractors have completed much of the earthworks and kerbing with associated drainage, landscaping, lighting underway. The project still needs surfaced. It appears there are still 2 months of work left, with the new junction planned on opening at the end of June 25.

  1. BIG roundabout, same wee roads?

I am far removed and residents may think I am out of line,
but no matter where you are coming from and where you are going to, this is simply a “T” junction. Calling it a “Y” would be a push.
Does it really need such a huge roundabout layout? What cost?
My first thoughts were this must be a very busy road but I know this road VERY WELL and I do not see any widening of the road to accommodate more traffic. In fact the lights at the railway bridge is something I would have thought to be a much more deserving focus.
I also have never seen ANY hold up for traffic going to or coming from Newton Farm. Have I just been lucky?
I often wonder who designs, but more importantly who DECIDES what roundabouts and weird chicanes are needed.
There are some “roundabouts” that people just drive over and not around……not far from this development on the Blantyre side!
I just think there is so much wasted funds and resources at the whims of some bureaucrats looking forward to their handsome pensions.
I say all this not knowing what the Taylor Wimpey development plan is right there.

  2. Good points Archie. The building of this roundabout smacks of ‘preparation for a greater volume of traffic coming’. The building of new houses from Drumsaggard and Newton in the direction of Blantyre is absolutely relentless with yet more plans for housing. Thats green corridor is getting smaller each decade. The road is very busy in mornings, even at the road to Newton, but it’s mostly from cars coming from that direction trying to get on to the M74.
