Major Social Media Shake-Up in Australia

Australia is banning social media for under 16s.

The Australian Government is bringing in a world-first rule: social media companies must take “reasonable steps” to stop under-16s setting up accounts — and deactivate any existing accounts which 13 – 15 year old children currency have.

Why? A government study found 96% of kids aged 10–15 use social media, with 7 in 10 exposed to harmful content, including bullying, misogyny, violence, eating disorder material and even grooming behaviour. The Government believes children need to get back to pastimes which do not expose them to harm.

The ban is extensive covering Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit, Kick and Twitch, with pressure growing to include gaming platforms too.

Companies that fail to comply face fines of up to $49.5m. Tools like ID checks, facial verification or age-inference tech may be used — though parents and kids won’t be penalised.

A bold move aiming to protect young people’s wellbeing in an increasingly risky online world. Have your say. Would YOU support this being done in Scotland?
