Tax Relief for People working from Home to end

This week, we’ve been looking at some things which are changing in 2026.

With January now here, some people may be thinking of getting their tax return submitted before the end of January deadline. However, changes are coming for those people who either work full time or part time from home.

From 6th April, individuals working from home will no longer be eligible to claim tax relief for their additional expenses. At present, certain employees can claim a deduction on their income tax for the extra household costs incurred while working from home – such as increased bills, a proportion of their heating, utility bills and business phone calls.

The claimable amount can either be based on actual expenditure, with proof, or at a fixed rate of £6 per week without needing to provide receipts. Employees whose costs are reimbursed by their employer do not qualify for this relief.

The UK Government Budget revealed that this tax relief would cease on April 6, 2026.

The government estimates that approximately 300,000 people will be affected by the removal of this tax relief, facing a tax increase of around £62 for basic rate taxpayers and £124 for higher rate taxpayers.

  1. Another miserably mean move by the UKGovt swayed by the employers lobby when the economic & social benefits arising from the natural reaction to Covid of enabling more work to be carried out from home are now being slowly diminished & attacked.
