Crochet Geeks Bee-hind Asda Blantyre’s Easter Post Box Topper

Here’s a nice story this Easter weekend! Colleagues at Asda Blantyre are buzzing with pride as a vibrant new post box topper was unveiled – created by the Crochet Geeks, a local group of fourteen women who dedicate their time and creativity to giving back to the community.

Now on display outside Asda Blantyre, the eye-catching topper is themed ‘Springtime at Asda’ and celebrates both the spirit of Blantyre and community creativity. The colourful display features hand-crotched bees and flowers, inspired by the iconic Bonnie Blantyre bees and the bright blooms that bring the town to life each year.

The talented Crochet Geeks meet twice a month at St. Andrew’s Church, where they work on a range of charitable projects for the local community, including the much-loved seasonal post box toppers.

This Easter theme was chosen to recognise Asda Blantyre’s ongoing commitment to the local community, particularly the vital connections fostered by Mary Sutherland, Asda Blantyre’s Community Champion.

Margaret Crookston, Crochet Geeks said,

“The Crochet Geeks wanted to celebrate the positive role Asda plays in supporting community groups in Blantyre. Mary’s work in building these relationships and links really inspired us, and it was important to reflect that in our Easter topper.

“Each topper is a true labour of love, requiring significant time and skill from our members, along with around three balls of wool. We make sure to use donated materials and where possible, reuse and recycle across multiple displays and projects.”

Mary Sutherland, Community Champion, Asda Blantyre added:

“At Asda Blantyre, we’re proud to support and celebrate the amazing work of local groups like the Crochet Geeks. Their dedication to bring our community together, and this beautiful post box topper perfectly reflects the spirit of spring and the vibrant life of Blantyre.

“It’s a pleasure to see how our store act as a hub for connection and inspiration, and we look forward to continuing to work with passionate groups that make a real difference locally.”

“We also support our community through extra charitable work, like producing keyrings for Asda Tickled Pink. creating blankets for the homeless, making worry monsters for nurseries, providing baby hats and blankets for maternity hospitals and crafting syringe driver bags for chemotherapy patients.”

The post box topper is expected to remain in place outside Asda Blantyre for around two months, celebrating Asda’s role as a community hub for local residents.
