A UK wide generational tobacco ban is to be introduced which will ban anybody born after 2008 from smoking. The move, aiming to improve health will mean Britain is taking monumental steps towards having a smoking free population in a generations time.
The new legislation will stop anyone born after 1 January 2009 (that’s any child aged 17 and younger) from purchasing tobacco-related products. This will effectively create the UK’s first smoke free generation. The proposals now await Royal assent before becoming law.
Smoking currently causes around 80,000 deaths a year in the UK, but as cigarettes become less popular, vaping has grown in popularity. Vaping will also be banned in cars carrying children, in playgrounds, and outside schools and at hospitals; however, vaping will still be allowed outside hospitals.
Have your say. Do you agree with the ban?
