ScotRail Introduces £10 Fare From July

If you’re planning to travel by train in Scotland this summer, there’s an important change coming.

From 1 July 2026, ScotRail says passengers who board a train without a valid ticket, despite having the opportunity to buy one before travelling, will be charged a minimum fare of £10.

However, ScotRail has stressed that several exemptions apply. For example, passengers who traditionally purchase Kids for a Quid tickets onboard can continue to do so. Those using a National Entitlement Card to buy concession tickets will also continue paying the usual fare without facing the new charge.

The move is aimed at encouraging passengers to purchase tickets before boarding where facilities are available, helping reduce fare evasion across the network.

ScotRail is urging travellers to familiarise themselves with the new rules and check whether any exemptions apply to them before they travel.

💬 What do you think of the change? Is a £10 minimum fare fair for those who board without a ticket, or could it catch out genuine passengers?
