Demolition Kirkton Care Home

Looks like time has been called on the derelict 1970’s Kirkton Care Home on Main Street, High Blantyre.

Beattie, the chosen demolition contractor for South Lanarkshire Council is now halfway through the demolition work after fencing off the site earlier this week.

The Care home, owned by South Lanarkshire Council has been derelict for a couple of years following the creation of Blantyre LIFE, the new state of the art care hub at Glasgow Road. The care home at High Blantyre was known for its excellent standards of care from staff, though the building itself was now outdated and had become unfit for purpose for 21st Century standards.

Built in 1967, the care home lasted 51 years before an announcement came in 2018 about its closure.

The land was transferred to Housing Dept last year and is now included in the Council’s Strategic Housing Improvement Plan. 12 much needed new council homes for social rent are planned, funded by the Scottish Government. 2 of these will be for special needs.
