Integration of Tech and Community Care at Blantyre Life

A senior Scottish Government minister has praised the innovative blend of technology and community-based support at a leading Lanarkshire care facility.

Health Secretary Neil Gray visited the Blantyre LIFE hub recently, meeting staff and service users who are benefiting from cutting-edge technology designed to help them live safely and independently at home. He was also given an overview of the site’s pioneering digital health work.

Opened in 2023, Blantyre LIFE combines a 20-bed intermediate care unit with 20 technology-enabled homes, each fitted with advanced telecare systems to support independent living. The facility is at the forefront of a range of smart health technologies, including a ground-breaking Amazon-powered healthcare pilot using Alexa-enabled devices and wearable monitors to support virtual wards and deliver highly personalised care.

Mr Gray said: “This is exactly the kind of preventative, community-based approach we need across the NHS and social care in Scotland. What’s particularly impressive is how well services are integrated and how closely Blantyre LIFE connects with the local community. The digital innovation here has huge potential to transform care and empower people to take control of their own health.”

Paul O’Neill, Head of Health and Social Care at South Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Partnership, added: “Blantyre LIFE is setting a new benchmark in digital health innovation. Our initiatives are aimed at transforming patient outcomes and delivering fully integrated care.”

One of the most anticipated developments is a Technologically Enriched Rehabilitation Gym, being launched in partnership with the University of Strathclyde. The specialist facility will give stroke survivors greater access to evidence-based rehabilitation, helping to speed recovery after hospital discharge.
