What a very special day it was for High Blantyre Primary today!
Over 120 people took part in the 150th Anniversary celebrations in the school today, Sunday 25th October, including current and former pupils, former and current teachers, Councillors, an MSP and other distinguished guests. The High Blantyre School first opened on 25 th October 1875, which is exactly 150 years ago today!
We were invited along to present a history talk, which appeared to be well received. It was wonderful to talk to former teachers and the event was well organised. From Oscar MacGregor a talented former pupil playing the piano, to the excellent guided tours put on by current pupils, there was plenty to see.
There were many dozens of photos on the walls, sorted into decades which had been provided by many individuals and kindly printed by Gavin Watson Printers.
During the history talk, guests heard some more about the history of the school and what life was like in Blantyre for schoolchildren during the 1870s.
Bonnie Blantyre summarised the event and whats coming up well, commenting earlier today “The school have really embraced this special anniversary. As well as having this day for our community, they are going to have two school shows next week. These will see the pupils showcase their talents and what they’ve learned about Blantyre – we can’t wait to see them!”
Well done to everybody for their involvement. To Gordon Cook for an interesting written account of the school history, as well as all the teachers, volunteers and to Head teacher Mrs Helsby for her invite and kindness.
Happy 150th Anniversary High Blantyre Primary!
