End of an Era for River City

A familiar piece of Scottish television history has disappeared following the demolition of the iconic River City set near Dumbarton.

For almost 24 years, the purpose-built streets and buildings were home to the fictional Glasgow community of Shieldinch, providing the backdrop for thousands of storylines since the popular BBC Scotland soap first hit our screens in 2002.

But following the decision to bring River City to an end, demolition crews moved onto the site in July, with excavators tearing down many of the familiar buildings.

This dramatic aerial image show what remained as the streets, houses and businesses which generations of viewers had come to recognise were reduced to piles of timber and rubble.

Among the famous Shieldinch locations to disappear were the iconic The Tall Ship pub and Oyster Café.

🎬 Filming on River City finished for the final time in April, bringing an emotional end to more than two decades of production at Dumbarton. The site itself has since been sold to property developer Turnberry Homes for £2.1 million, despite efforts to preserve Dumbarton Studios as a film and television production facility.

For fans, however, there’s still one final trip to Shieldinch to come.

📺 The last-ever episode of River City will be broadcast shortly on Monday 31st August, bringing the curtain down on the Scottish soap after an incredible 24 years. The end of an era for Scottish Soap.
