Paul Fitzpatrick, a local hero

There was drama this week at the River Clyde which saw a brave Blantyre man jump in fully clothed in an exciting rescue.

Local woman Samantha Johnston was walking her beloved pet dog, Biscuit (pictured) near to the river edge yesterday evening, Wednesday 7th May. Suddenly, her dog fell into the Clyde near the Bothwell Woodland walk and to Samantha’s horror, her dog began to struggle and be swept away in the current.

Panic stricken, Samantha tried in vain to reach her dog, but in vain knew she would struggle herself to get back up to the riverbank.

A Blantyre man, Paul Fitzpatrick was walking past and quickly noticed Samantha struggling. Talk about being in the right place at the right time! Without hesitation, Paul jumped into the river, fully clothed to reduce the stricken dog. Managing to get hold of ‘Biscuit’, he successfully rescued the animal back to dry land!

Samantha later found out the young man who rescued Biscuit was from Blantyre and that he wasn’t a strong swimmer. Despite this, Paul showed remarkable bravery, compassion and quick thinking.

Samantha told Blantyre Telegraph, “Afterwards, I managed to locate Paul online and he was so lovely! I wanted to gift him but he only wanted me to give a donation to the dogs trust but I managed to get a gift card sent to his email”

Thankfully both Samantha and Biscuit have recovered from their ordeal. This story is however about Paul Fitzpatrick, a local hero who should be immensely proud. We’re sure all our readers will join us in the comments in thanking Paul for all his efforts.
