What a disappointing sight at the Calder, where washing machines and other rubbish have been dumped near the bridge.
Large household appliances and assorted waste have simply been abandoned, spoiling an area of countryside and creating an unnecessary environmental hazard close to the water.
There really is no excuse for this. Fly-tipping is illegal, and in Scotland offenders can currently face a £500 fixed penalty and up to £40,000 if prosecuted in court with more serious cases potentially resulting in prosecution and much larger fines.
It’s particularly concerning to see rubbish dumped at the Calder and pretty idiotic considering CCTV is available at the entrances. SEPA advises that fly-tipping incidents near a watercourse should be reported to the relevant local authority, which can involve SEPA or Police Scotland where appropriate.
Someone has gone to the effort of transporting these washing machines and other items here — effort that could instead have been used to dispose of them properly.
🌳 Our countryside isn’t a dumping ground. Blantyre isn’t a dumping fround.
If anybody witnessed suspicious activity around the bridge, or has information which could help identify those responsible, please consider reporting it to the appropriate authorities. Hopefully this mess can be removed quickly and the area restored.

That is disgusting, that looks like it’s come from a private house, why fly tip when the recycling centre is just up the road from there. Hopefully when the council pick it up they find some evidence as to the perpetrator address 🤬
