Newhousemill Bridge, linking High Blantyre to East Kilbride, was severely damaged by a car, compromising the bridge parapet and resulting in a road closure on Newhousemill Road between East Kilbride and Hamilton. Diversions are in place, and extensive repairs are anticipated due to the damage’s severity.
The Newhousemill Bridge in High Blantyre is now open, contrary to earlier indications suggesting it would remain closed throughout July. The repairs were completed faster than expected. Known locally as “The Wee Bridge,” it frequently experiences traffic accidents due to its narrowness, prompting discussions on how to enhance safety.
Following a surge in collisions at Newhousemill Road Bridge, police are intensifying enforcement efforts. In 2025, there were 32 accidents, causing significant damage. Officers monitored the area in response to public complaints, advising drivers on vehicle size and safe driving practices to prevent further incidents.
Commuters face disruptions on Newhousemill Road due to an accident that has closed Newhousemill Bridge until March 25. Significant damage requires three weeks of repairs. A diversion is established through High Common Road, A726 Strathaven Road, A725 Kingsway, and several other streets to redirect traffic.
Best to avoid Newhousemill Road at the moment. There’s a car stuck as of lunchtime today, with approaching vehicles having to turn around.
