A family in East Kilbride have been reunited with their beloved cat George – an incredible nine years after he went missing.
Owner Fran Henriquez was stunned when the Scottish SPCA phoned to say they had found her tabby, who disappeared back in 2016. The family had long believed he had died, but thanks to his microchip, George was traced back to them after being picked up in Glasgow earlier this month.
Now 14 years old, George is settling back into family life with Fran, her husband Billy, and their two children – alongside their other cat, Freddy.
Fran said: “He is exactly how we remember him – friendly, gentle and so relaxed. Our elder child remembered him from before, and our younger son, who had only ever heard about George, was absolutely thrilled to finally meet him.”
The family never stopped looking in those early days, putting up posters and searching rural areas. Eventually, they gave up hope – until this month’s unbelievable phone call.
The Scottish SPCA say George’s story is a powerful reminder of why microchipping pets is so important, as they continue to campaign for compulsory cat chipping in Scotland.
Fran added: “It’s bittersweet as he’s now an elderly cat and we’ve missed much of his life. But it feels like a miracle – and we’re just so happy to have him home for his retirement.” ❤️
